In a cryogenic air separation system, atmospheric feed is compressed and cooled to remove water vapour, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons before entering a vacuum tank where a distillation column separates the air into nitrogen and an oxygen-enriched waste stream. The nitrogen then enters the supply line to the downstream device, where the product can be compressed to the required pressure.
Cryogenic nitrogen plants can deliver high purity gas at rates ranging from less than 25,000 standard cubic feet per hour (scfh) to over 2 million scfh. They are usually made with a standard purity of 5 ppm oxygen in nitrogen, although higher purities are possible.
